Given Halloween's association through the centuries with darkness, death and the supernatural, it seems odd (at least it does to me) that there was a time when Halloween meant romance.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, many Halloween games and rituals revolved around finding your true love or the person you were destined to marry (or both). These customs are immortalized in Robert Burns' poem and in these turn-of-the-century postcards.
