For the zillionth time - bless Martha Stewart. She may be the devil herself, but she makes the most delightfully wicked Halloween treats.
Bloody candles are a simple one: take one white candle, one red candle -- light the red candle and drip wax all down the white one. Of course, Martha tells you how to do it the non-messy, non-frustrating way.
I think there is even a video.
For really smart bases, you can search the thrift stores or buy some of the wooden ones that are sold at craft stores like Michael's.
Craft stores also sell 'antique finishing' paints to make a tarnished bronze or silver effect. Painting the holder flat black, then using a silver spray paint that you blot off in a few key areas (crevices, areas likely to corrode on "real" metal holders) with a dry cloth, you've got a thing of antiqued beauty.
Halloween is coming, drearies! It's time to start preparing. Only 255 days left.
