Thanks to a conspiracy by prominent North American groundhogs, Shubenacadie Sam, Wiarton Willie and Punxsutawney Phil, 20cm of snow and freezing rain arrived on my doorstep yesterday. This resulted in the inevitable "snow day", which in turn, resulted in me being trapped in the house with my entire family. And when that happens, I can forget about gaining access to a computer or a television. So what to do?

Well, at times like these, I retreat to my bedroom and snuggle under the covers with some of my favourite golden age comic books. Their vivid four-colour world and simple vocabulary never fail to lift my spirits. And while most of my golden age reprints involve superheroes and talking animals, I was lucky enough last
Free Comic Book Day to obtain this sampler of
EC Comics. A selection of vintage EC stories, this sampler was intended to generate interest in the new hardcover volumes of classic EC titles like
Tales From the Crypt and
Vault of Horror. And it worked.

Nothing chases away those mid-winter blues like reading
Spawn of Venus and
Curse of the Full Moon in startling colour. Makes me want to rush to
my favourite comic shop and buy them all. But first, someone has to shovel my driveway.
