25 Days Until Hallowen: SPIDER DECOR

Cobweb Candles
My own horror at spiders has been long-lived. Since childhood, I have been petrified of anything arachnid, though absolutely fascinated with anything Halloween.

In my smallish, southern town people were always split as to whether Halloween was a "Christian" thing to celebrate, and either as a result or because we all lived so far apart in the country there were very few yard haunters.

Except this one house: they had a massive spiderweb made of ropes that they kept up year round. I loved driving by there. Around Halloween more props would come out, and a massive spider would sometimes get added to the mix. I loved it, maybe in part because I was so scared of the things.

Centsational Girl's Mantel
We're almost at the close of spider-friendly posts (thank all that is good in the world), but to cap off what you might need to throw a really terrifying spider party, here are some great decor ideas for you!

Halloween 2011: The Dining Room

Damn, those spiders are BAD this year. They've covered everything in webbies!

Oh well, at least Uncle Irvin's potrait looks happy ... in the reflection (don't you just love those cheesy lenticulars? this one plays sounds. Goodness help me if my husband realizes this and starts pushing the button).

Halloween 2011: The Entry Table

Just setting out the odds and ends at this point. This is my entry table -- full of crafts and gifts from years past.

Like the long-nosed Venetian mask; it's not wearable, but it looks appropriate creepy just sitting about as part of the decor. I still want to host a Halloween Masked Ball some year -- if I do, I'll make one that doesn't need to be tied on. And in the background you'll also see a wine-bottle candle holder; the label is from Love Manor's collection, I think. I really thought about using these as part of my wedding centerpieces, but in the end abandoned the idea for fear they wouldn't be steady and would catch my guests on fire (my friends drink).
The right side of the table just has a few pieces of wedding-memorabilia: a little tree that was, I think, on the treat table. One of the "Eek" signs that spotted around the house, and a glass candleabra that one of my bridesmaids gifted me.

And goth-darn-it, I don't think I ever posted about my adventure in re-finishing some lampshades. Or if I did, I can't find the post. At any rate, I made them all dark and lacy. And added what might be the most subtle faux-spider-webbing that I have ever managed.

Halloween 2011: The Decoration Starts!

The rule around the house is (after much convincing by my darling man): we don't start decorating until after his birthday, which falls in mid-September, and we take everything down by Thanksgiving. I keep out a few skulls and have general freedom for haunted-house chic year-round, but for specifically Halloween decor, that's my window.

So Saturday was the first weekend day where the boxes could come down from the attic and I could start setting things out. OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!

I'm an interior haunter; my yard is spook-free. I have yet to think about themes or specific props this year, so I decided to just dig into storage and go whole-hog on all the nifty little odds and ends I've collected or been gifted over the years.

I will post some set-up pictures over the next few days. Just to start sharing the spirit of the season. But I cannot wait to start crafting and seeing what wonderful prop ideas all my Halloween bloggy friends are pulling together this year. It's so exciting!

READY FOR HALLOWEEN DAY 19: Elegant Wreath

Remember when Halloween used to be all about getting married and pretty wedding decor?

Yeah, me too. I really am glad that's all over and I can just enjoy this year!

But sometimes I still see things that make me think Halloween=romance. Craftily Ever After has a wreath project that would be stunning at a Hallowedding. If you don't have a lacy shirt to cut up, you can find a yard of lace fabric -- often in the leftovers bin of your local fabric store.

READY FOR HALLOWEEN DAY 12: Felty Bat Pillow

Gosh darn it, I was going to make something like this and post about it. I am not even kidding... I was inspired by one I saw in a store with butterflies and thought, 'bats would be so much better.'

Oh well, now I don't have to take pictures as I make one for myself. :) Ameroonie Designs did a much better job at crafting a diy felt bat pillow than I could have hoped to!

READY FOR HALLOWEEN DAY 3: Blood Jars

I have this weird hoarding habit when it comes to glass jars and bottles. I think it's because my dad find such cool uses for them that seem both homey and eclectic (like storing and displaying grains in the kitchen, or holding tealights in for subdued outdoor lighting).

This comes in handy, though, when I sit down to craft because -- obviously -- I like lights in jars and I like to craft mood lighting. On this year's list, blood jars:

Just as accent pieces. And if you are a crafty type of person, you have all the supplies you need around your house already:
  • Old spaghetti jar (cleaned, of course -- I like Bertolli for their jars)
  • Modge Podge (or other gluey sealer; come to think of it, white glue would probably work fine)
  • A cheapy paint brush
  • Red food coloring or dark red paint
  • a tealight/small candle
I reused one of my test jars from last year -- I was inspired by Pumpkin Rot's Witch Jars and spent a long evening with glue and paint before being reminded (nicely) that it was not the priority wedding preparation project I thought it was, and that I was behind on other things.

But that was last year, and this year that gluey jar that had never gotten a proper coating of paint to make it gooey and gory got a little bit of blood and mess!

I poured some of the modge podge into a disposable container and added quite a bit of food coloring (why? because I didn't have any red paint and the modge-podge ensured it would dry with an opaqueness that would look, well, a bit bloodier).

I painted a generous amount around the rim of the jar, then blew downward to start it spreading in natural curves down the jar. I added more food coloring and darked the rim, letting it glob in places to make for a gorier impression when it dried.

Then I flicked a little red modge podge with the paintbrush across and around the jar to make a splatter pattern. Just because I don't mind my fingers being stained, I also dipped them in the 'blood,' blotted them lightly, and then grabbed around the jar to make a handprint (for some reason, this refused to photograph properly).

Let dry and insert tealight and you have a bloody little lamp to set about at your party.

Happy Haunting, fiends!

READY FOR HALLOWEEN DAY 2: Deadening Up Your Walls

Some people 'liven' things up, some of us just don't.

My bedroom is vaguely (and by vaguely, I mean not so you would notice) nautically themed. It's a perfect area for me to create and display a bone-framed 'sealife specimen' frame.

Bless your little heart, Martha Stewart -- I'm ticked at your lack of enthusiasm for the grand holiday this year, but I still appreciate the dreary decor your staff dream up.

Now, a few cobwebs put in their places and this would be a wonderfully gloomy addition to my abode.

Happy Haunting!

Decorative skull plates. Amazing decorative skull plates.

And you can make them. They will show you how to if you visit the link!

It's getting to be Halloween -- I just love this time of year, when the craft blogs start to come alive with projects I actually care about!!!

Decoupage Pumpkins - like stenciled!

Bugaboo, Mini, Mr & Me has been decoupaging pumpkins. It's not the idea that's revolutionary, it's the exact materials and the result -- they look almost stenciled and they are so elegant!

Sounds like an easy (and relatively inexpensive) way to get some really gorgeous patterns on wedding pumpkins or general seasonal decor.

Happy hauntings, all.

Somber Pumpkin Centerpiece

It's so hard to remember, but I feel like this time last year I was still worrying over centerpieces a bit.

These would have been kind of perfect for my black-and-silvery Hallowedding, so I must share them with my friends (all of you guys out there kindly reading my sporadic nonsense!): Martha's Glittery Gray Pumpkin Table.

She says the dusty miller is optional, but I rather disagree. You can find the plant at pretty much any home and garden store (at least around here), and it's so soft and ghostly.

The whole table on her project page looks divine. Makes me think that a gray table cloth is the way to go, rather than black, for any Halloween party this year. The stretched cheese cloth is just so haunted-house chic!

All-in-all, not a bad balance of spooky and elegant.

Decoupaged Photocopies for a Bathroom to Love

Does this really work? I'm dying to try it. The fancy wall elements you see in the picture are actually photocopies decoupaged onto the wall with wallpaper glue. It sounds like they photo copies were made, and the designer then hand-painted any extra depth or color.

More instructions here.

What isn't a photocopy is a stencil, and I'm smitten. ...we are re-modeling bathrooms right now, after all...

Striking Chandelier

When you see this chic black chandelier, do you swoon? Yes? Me too.

I need a black chandelier with lots of dangly bits and bothers. It would be perfect in my... I don't even know what room to put it in. I already picked new light fixtures before seeing this project, and I don't think my Husband is going to let me spray paint any of them a shiny black.

And adding mardi gras beads? Out of the question.

But let's just say I found a crazy old chandelier in a second hand shop of some kind, or that someone was throwing out when remodeling... well, we could probably find a place for it. right?

Pillow Pumpkin Patch

Barbolot over at Craftster made this excellent stack of pumpkin pillows with her family this past year, in lieu of carving the real thing.

What a fantastic idea -- stitch together and stuff some pumpkin-shaped orange pillows, then let friends or family come over and cut out felt faces!! A little bit of fabric glue and you're all set. Plus, they could make great themed accent pieces.

Do you see that guy with the mustache in the bottom right corner? I'm so making him when I get some more free time. He's rad.

Some White Beans, Some Black Beans

This is kind of nice as a year-round homey touch; if you keep display kitchen jars, use Martha's instructions to make one that's a little bit batty.

Husband and I are trying to set up shelves above our kitchen fireplace to house our flour, sugar, etc jars. This would make a nice, subtle addition.

Coupled with the cauldron I hope to find to place in the fireplace itself, my kitchen might start feeling quite welcoming. :)

Lamp-Shade Inspiration

I saw the most fabulous lamp re-con on Craftster, and now I'm on a mission to figure out how to recover lamps:

A little bit of textured cloth (I'm betting that old pillow-cases would, indeed, do the trick), some black lace, and some trim... the back beading would be icing on the proverbial cake, would it not?

What a nice project ideal. I might get started this weekend!
