the good, the bad, and the almost inedible

My ongoing scan of the magazine racks for signs of Halloween has revealed another early arrival.

This is an annual collection that I usually pass up. Some of the recipes are appealing, but half the magazine has always contained "craft ideas" that have been cheesy at best. But perhaps I'm not the only one who has held this opinion. Because this year, the craft section has been scaled back. Way back. At first glance, this year's issue appears to be heavily slanted in favour of recipes. And while many of these are also cheesy and lame, disguised as "family-friendly", there are some that look almost good enough to eat.

With some exceptions.

Now, don't misunderstand. I enjoy Rice Krispie treats as much as anyone. But when I'm faced with picking the Rice Krispie and marshmallow mixture off a styrofoam cone . . . it loses some of its appeal.

But it's not all bad. These candy corn shots sound delicious.

I may not wait until Halloween. Pass the vodka.
