This time around, Universal waited only two years before re-visiting its Mummy films with The Mummy's Tomb. The studio must have been pleased with the film's predecessor because several characters from The Mummy's Hand have returned to be terrorized again.
It's decades later. But the mummy Kharis and his Egyptian guardian haven't forgotten those madcap American archaeologists who looted Princess Ananka's tomb and are determined to fulfil the promise of the curse and exact their revenge.
No explanation is given for why this revenge has taken decades. One can only surmise that their miraculous recovery from the fate they suffered in the previous film has taken time.
Too much time it seems. The mummy's guardian is about to breathe his last. But not before he entrusts the revenge plotting and the care and feeding of Kharis to a younger man. A much younger man. Who develops an interest in the young girlfriend of the original archaeologist's young son and enlists Kharis's help in attempting to secure her undying love.
The Mummy's Tomb tries to re-capture the creepiness of the original Mummy film. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite achieve it. Nor does it contain the humour of The Mummy's Hand. Unless you count the torch-wielding mob dressed in white shirts, ties and hats. They were quite amusing.
I'm sensing a downward trend in the quality of the Mummy sequels. Nevertheless, I will see them through to the end.
