Making my way through the films included in my recently acquired Wolfman collection, next on my list for Halloween viewing was She-Wolf of London. Billed as another of the classic black-and-white Universal monster movies that I'm so fond of, I sat down with a bowl of popcorn and eager anticipation. Phyllis Allenby is the "she" who believes she is the latest victim of some vague, never fully-explained, family curse. She is convinced that, because of this curse, she turns into a werewolf at night to murder, pillage, and wreak general havoc in her community. Okay, it sounded promising at first, so I settled in with my popcorn to wait for her transformation. I waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. The popcorn was gone and still there was no transformation. In fact, I discovered, this isn't a werewolf movie at all! It's simply a melodramatic suspense thriller, and I use the words suspense and thriller loosely - the villain is obvious almost from the very beginning. Seems that this movie was included in the Wolfman collection based on title alone. Hmmmm. So, a minor detour. Back to my "real" monster movie viewing next week.
