A few years ago, when asked the inevitable question: "What are you going to be for Halloween?", my son replied that he would like to be "Jack". Not any Jack that I might be familiar with, of course, but an animated character from the favourite video game of the day. The "Jack" in question was a rather innocuous-looking, pumpkin-headed, animated character.
So, despite my limited creative abilities, we were able to create a very basic papier mache head which we thought bore quite a good likeness to the "real" Jack. The costume was a huge success on October 31st. But come November 1st, Jack found his way into the basement storage room, where he has remained quietly ever since. Fast forward to this fall, when I took another look at Jack and decided there might be new life for him after all. Perhaps the little guy deserved another season.
Out came the knife, scissors, paper, and glue. Some facial surgery and some minor dermal reconstruction and viola - a whole new pumpkin. No, it's not pretty. But a Halloween pumpkin doesn't have to be. And yes, he is the victim of someone in the early learning stages of papier mache. But we love Jack anyway. Not sure yet how or where Jack will spend his Halloween night, but he'll likely be happy just to get out of the house.
