Looking at some of the intricate jack-o-lanterns that show up at this time of year, I can't help but admire the creativity and skill involved in designing and carving these pumpkin masterpieces. However, while the designs and detailing are certainly impressive, I've always had a special fondness for the more traditional, triangular-faced jack-o-lanterns. So, feeling nostalgic, I began looking back through my old Halloween photographs and I soon noticed that this affinity for the traditional jack-o-lantern has a long history in my family. Over the years, apart from a few diversions, our jack-o-lanterns have remained true to their basic roots. It is an admirable collection indeed and while I would like to take full credit for these creations, I must acknowledge that, with the exception of the first one, all were designed or carved by my children over the years.
Admittedly, there have been some minor variations on the standard theme - round eyes and mouth, inverted triangles, bulbous noses. But, overall, the devotion to the traditional jack-o-lantern face is apparent. Yes, pumpkin carving doesn't get any simpler than this. No elaborate, detailed stencils in this house. Just give us a sharp knife and a scoop for the pumpkin guts and we're good to go. And happily (perhaps surprisingly) no fingers were lost in the carving of these pumpkins.
