Getting Ready for Gary

It's Gary Oldman day at my house! Squee!

Two lovely friends of mine are coming over to enjoy a few of his fine films (5th Element and the Professional or maybe Dracula or one of the new Batman movies), and I'm going to sit around and sigh happily because I have a mild crush on the man.

Anyway, I have an odd sort of menu I'm planning for the occasion, but the menu is mildly Dracula-inspired. I always drink... wine (unlike the father of the undead), so that will be present, but just to make sure he doesn't get to handsy on anyone's throat we'll be starting off with some crusty, toasty french bread and:

Spicy Garlic Soup (mmm... creamy, garlicky, delicious!)
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1 large garlic head, cloves separated, peeled, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 3 cups vegetable stock or canned low-salt broth
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
Melt the butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and sauté until golden (3 minutes, estimated). Add flour and stir until mixture is just turning a nice golden color (about 2 minutes). Add stock and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes. Season with cayenne and salt.

This is a creamy, buttery soup perfect for bread.

Now, enjoy my beloved Gary as the Devil:
