labels and learning curves

Sometimes I feel like an idiot.

I picked up these bottles at a yard sale a couple of weeks ago, planning to turn them into a Halloween kitchen prop with the help of a few creative labels. At first, I had thought about downloading some of the many potion bottle labels available on-line. But then I decided it might be more fun to create my own. And fun to play around with Photoshop.

I've never used Photoshop. But it seems that everyone else on the planet has. It's one of those entities that has made the transition from noun to verb. Like Google. So I thought: How hard can it be? I downloaded my free trial and set to work, planning to spend an hour creating some quick, nifty labels. Well then . . .

I consider myself a person of average intelligence. But I've never seen the word "rasterize" before. And it would appear that there's a vast hidden world of "layers" out there. Arrange layers. Group layers. Duplicate layers. Lock layers. Delete layers. And yes, rasterize layers. Whatever that means.

Part of my struggle may have stemmed from the fact that I didn't start with a blank slate. Instead, I tried to modify a scanned image. At least, that's what I've chosen to blame it on. I have a collection of historical advertisements for local businesses dating back to 1874. I like the font style and the wording used in these ads and thought that, with minor adjustments, they might make interesting labels. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

But while the learning curve was indeed steep, I eventually made it to the top. Or perhaps to the first plateau. And soon, Larry Talbot had taken over proprietorship of the British Warehouse from M. Kearney and had begun supplying wolfbane extract to the masses.

The transition may have taken a little more than an hour. But who's counting?
