24 Days Until Halloween: SPIDER MOVIES

This is the last time, I swear. After this, no more spider-centricity. I want to leave you with a few creepy-crawly films to watch if you're feeling spooky this weekend (*'d ones were instant-watchable on Netflix earlier this week). Spiders do not necessarily equal fantastic horror, but as I am genuinely scared of the things --- eww, eww, eww.

  • Tarantula (1955)
  • Earth vs. the Spider (1958)
  • The Giant Spider Invasion (1975)
  • Kingdom of the  Spiders (1977)
  • Arachnophobia (1990)
  • MST3K: Mystery of Spider Island (1999)*
  • Spiders (2000)
  • Spider 2: Breeding Ground (2001)*
  • Arachnid (2001)*
  • 8 Legged Freaks (2002)
  • Arachnia (2003)
  • In the Spider's Web (2007)*
  • Ice Spiders (2007)
  • The Mist (2007) - I don't know if outer-dimensional spiders count, but this movie gave me a lasting case of the icks.

That was all the research on Creature Features I could muster on spiders; after that I started feeling the twitch of, 'is something crawling on me?!' panic.

And keep in mind I said these were spider movies. I did not say they were all good spider movies.

I stole my friend's picture, because you need to see her genius:

I'm sincerely happy that these were not my idea. I'm not watching that movie. But mad props to my homegirl!

Bloody Nails Project

This is a lovely alternative to french tips, isn't it? Bloody fingernail tips!

You need:
  • Red Nail Polish
  • Darker Red Nail Polish (you could mix red and black, as is done in the tutorial)
  • Black Nail Polish
  • Clear Nail Polish
  • A make-up sponge
This would make a beautiful manicure for a vampire bride. Or for your next Zombie Pub Crawl costume, ladies and gentlemen.

If wanting this to look glamorous, I would suggest finding a really thick-drying top coat. Or doing several layers of the clear coat, letting it dry completely between takes. The reds will be very textured, and this will help smooth out the look.

A Little Irish Celebration --or-- Some Macabre St. Patty's Day Fun!

I'm not afraid to admit that I have a HUGE crush on Warwick Davis. I have since I was a child. LOVE. HIM.

So, here is what I think everyone everywhere should be doing today: watching the Leprechaun movies (featuring my dear Warwick) and making the Irish Club's Irish Stew, keeping a healthy portion of bone in -- and what creepy friends of mine aren't big fans of having skeletal remains in their stew?

Ingredients:

3/4 cup pear barley
3 pounds rib lamb chops not less than 1 inch thick, trimmed of any fat
5 medium onions, chopped, or 12 boiling onions
5 medium carrots, peeled and chopped, or 12 baby ones, peeled
3 large parsnips, peeled and chopped
1 1/4 cups chicken stock
1 1/4 cups veal stock
Salt and freshly milled black pepper
Leaves from a medium rosemary sprig, minced
3 sage leaves, minced
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
8 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced about 1/4 inch thick

Directions on NPR.org from Nigella Lawson.

-----

My recommendation? A genuine classic which blends horror, everyone's favorite mythological Irish creature, and SPACE:

Feel free to make your own Irish Cream and or grab a Guinness and play the Leprechaun drinking game. :)

Spider and Blooddrip Necklaces

These necklaces are brilliant in their simplicity; a little bit of the right kind of craft paint, and you have yourself a horribly wonderful bit of bling.

Can I say bling if it doesn't sparkle?

Horrorific Home Decor: Eyeball Doorknob Cover

I'm writing this way, way far in advance - as this is posting, I'm actually on a plane to Europe. Maybe even already in Rome.

YAY, HONEYMOON!!

It's time to relax and start work on ghoulish decor for my home. Like crocheted Eyeball Doorknob Covers, from craftster's bella_domanie. Have you ever seen such a thing before?

When I was little my grandmother had sewn little mouse doorknob covers; it made getting into the guest bedroom so very difficult as they would slide around as you turned. You had to grip hard if you wanted that knob to turn!

So I think these could serve a dual evil purpose: freaking out your house guests before driving them batty. :)

Love. It.

Yummy Blood Slides!

I love this "Dexter" show, and I've never even seen it. Why? Because lots of folks around the internet seem to want to have Dexter-themed parties, and the ideas are just phenomenal!

Thank you, forkable, for once again making my haunted little heart happy.

The Carrie Cake

Being someone named "Carrie" I really think that I need this cake for my birthday:

Seen originally on Shock Week.

Look, I'll even learn you how to make one for your friend here at CreepyCupcakes, Carrie Mae.

First, watch this video on how to make a princess cake:

Now, make a princess cake. A strawberry blonde doll wearing a light pink (almost white) icing dress would be a plus. A kahlua cake with white chocolate butter cream would just be bonus points.

I would probably paint her in 'blood' with some kind of complimentary sauce -- maybe a raspberry sauce, or some really nice strawberry jam. A little bit of simple syrup with red food coloring would work too, if you like your teeth rotten.

For the roses ... you can buy little tiny roses at just about any craft store, and most walmarts. Just wrap them in a pink napkin (or tie them in a bow with some pink ribbon -- I can't fully remember, but I think that would be more authentic to the movie).

Ta-da! "They're All Going to Laugh At You" sign is totally optional.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARRIE MAAAAAAAAA--AAAAE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME! (It's in December, so we've all got time to practice).

Blood Bath Mat

I saw it here first, but looky! A bloodied bath mat.

Doesn't it just get your DIY mind reeling? I'm just trying to figure our what the best color/consistency would be, and how long it would take to get the paint off my feet...

Or, you know, you could just buy it.

A well made-up Halloween...

I love the day-of-the-dead make-up pictured; simple but wonderful details, pretty but spooky. Gorgeous. The entire photo set is wonderful - you should take a look.

Somebody did a great job (here) of looking through Flickr and finding some truly excellent face-paint examples. It really makes me rethink my next Halloween costume.

For the true best is artistic, creepy-sexy gore, though -- I have to recommend two galleries I found myself browsing the other day over at HauntSpace: Jess and Ramie. Their work is delightful.

I *heart* These (Anatomical Heart Cards)

Sheila posted the most awesome thing over at Cheeky Magpie - you've really got to see this:

I swear to all that is good in the world, if I wasn't sending out so many wedding invitations... man, my hands hurt just thinking about cutting that many hearts out!

There is a .jpg template for this at the magpie blog. Go get it. Now already, before it disappears (the way things sometimes do on the web)! Save it and hold it dear.

Bloody Candles

For the zillionth time - bless Martha Stewart. She may be the devil herself, but she makes the most delightfully wicked Halloween treats.

Bloody candles are a simple one: take one white candle, one red candle -- light the red candle and drip wax all down the white one. Of course, Martha tells you how to do it the non-messy, non-frustrating way.

I think there is even a video.

For really smart bases, you can search the thrift stores or buy some of the wooden ones that are sold at craft stores like Michael's.

Craft stores also sell 'antique finishing' paints to make a tarnished bronze or silver effect. Painting the holder flat black, then using a silver spray paint that you blot off in a few key areas (crevices, areas likely to corrode on "real" metal holders) with a dry cloth, you've got a thing of antiqued beauty.

Halloween is coming, drearies! It's time to start preparing. Only 255 days left.
